This initiative aims to ban synthetic pesticides, not all pesticides. Nicotine, produced by tobacco plants is not a synthetic pesticide. The Bordeaux mixture (copper sulphate) is not concerned either. Treatments used in organis farming would also not affected by this initiative. Neonicotinoids, on the other hand are synthetic pesticides. Their impact on the environment and in particular on pollinating insects (especially bees) has led the EU to make a partial moratorium on their use. In addition, France decided in September 2016 to ban them completely.
As an example, glyphosate would also be banned as targeted by the initiative. This herbicide has been the subject of many scientific works, and its use strongly questioned. Whether in France, Switzerland or Austria, many municipalities have decided to ban the use of this product for the maintenance of parks and public gardens.
Lastly, organochlorines, such as DDT for example, would be banned from use, as well as organophosphorus compounds, which are neurotoxic insecticides, for example, sarin gas.
